Scientific name Morpho peleides. Morpho Peleides is named after the Greek hero - Achilles Peleides. It is one of the most beautiful day butterflies of the Nymphalidae family, like monarch. The wingspan reaches 12 cm.
The scales that cover the wings collect and reflect blue light, so they appear blue to the human eye. With its bright coloring, the butterfly attracts the opposite sex, confuses predators and intimidates rivals. This is a unique case of protective coloration.
The front pair of tarsi is greatly reduced, so it seems that there are only four of them. Morpho Peleida has taste buds on its paws, so the butterfly dances while searching for food. He likes to eat rotting bananas or something fermented.
Females lay greenish eggs in the shape of a hemisphere. After hatching, the caterpillar eats the shell of the egg. Caterpillars are brown with yellowish spots, covered with soft pile.
Morpho Peleida lives on average 2-3 weeks. Males live in packs, which is unusual for animals with this coloration. Before the flight, Morphs warm up in the sun, thereby saving energy.
