Butterfly variety

The sizes of butterflies are so different that some of them seem to be just giants compared to others - pygmies. The largest butterfly in the world (wingspan 27 cm) - gray bat agripina, which lives in Brazil. The wingspan of the atlas moth from Southeast Asia is slightly smaller (25 cm).

Great variety of butterflies

Very large and beautiful Indonesian butterflies-cavaliers from the group of birdwings. To get such “birds”, they are shot from a bow. In Russia, the record holders in size are recognized large nocturnal peacock eye and oak silkworm, having a wingspan of 15 and 12 cm, respectively.

The role of pygmies in the world of butterflies is played by mining moths. The tips of the front wings of these butterflies are only 3-5 mm apart.

These creatures are called “miners” because their tiny flattened caterpillars “manage” to gnaw through mines (as galleries were called in the old days, where a powder charge was laid) between the upper and lower skin of tree leaves.
