Butterfly Swallowtail

The scientific name is Papilio machaon, a family of sailboats (Papilionidae). Butterfly Machaon is rare types and listed in the Red Book. The reduction of the species is associated, first of all, with the destruction of the butterfly's habitats, as well as in connection with trapping. A detailed description will be below.

The picture shows that Swallowtail yellow wings with a wide black stripe and moon-shaped spots along the edge. On the rear wings There is an elongated "tail" of black color with yellow-blue spots. In the corner of the wing there is a red-brown eye as in the photo.

The butterfly lives in the Palearctic region from Russia to China and Japan, as well as in Canada and Alaska, inhabits the alpine plains of the Himalayan range. It flies at an altitude of 2 to 16 thousand feet, depending on where you live.

The swallowtail flies from May to August on the edges, clearings, meadows and in the garden. Usually makes 2-3 clutches per year. Females lay yellow round eggs on umbrella plants (dill, parsley, cumin), and after 7 days caterpillars appear on them.

The caterpillar is green with black transverse stripes and bright red dots. By the middle of summer, the caterpillar becomes large, clumsy and hardly eats. It attaches upside down to the stem, and after a while the chrysalis appears.

The swallowtail pupa is greenish-brown in color and overwinters. The swallowtail butterfly appears in April-May.
