Scientific name Colias-hyale, diurnal. Belongs to the family of whites (as well as Cabbage butterfly). Charles Darwin was captured by this butterfly on his ship. While migrating to Indonesia, the butterflies decided to take a break on his ship.
Wingspan 50-60 mm. Males are light orange in color with a narrow black eyeliner along the outer edge of the wing. Females are deep orange with a wide black border.
Meadow jaundice produces only one generation a year; it flies in the middle of summer. The caterpillar feeds on astragalus leaves from July to August, and pupates at the end of summer. The pupa hibernates. The butterfly is listed in the Red Book.
Many species of jaundice, such as Colias palaeno, are crop pests.
