In science, its name is Aporia crataegi. White with black veins, it is often confused with cabbage. Butterfly begins its mass years at the end of May. Caterpillars of Hawthorn live on bird cherry. In hot weather, butterflies accumulate near ponds and eagerly suck water.
It is with this butterfly that the myth of "bloody rains" is associated. When hatching from the chrysalis, the butterfly leaves a drop of red liquid that hardens on trees and bushes. And during the rain, red drops fall on people hiding under the trees. And it rains "bloody rain", which in medieval Europe was a sign of "God's Punishment".
But how does this relate to crop failure? And so, that in hot weather, the time of mass reproduction of Hawthorn begins, and as a result, other pests of the crop.
Butterfly Hawthorn has one generation. Caterpillars hibernate and wake up as soon as bird cherry buds swell.
